A workpiece carrier is always required for depaneling. The design of the workpiece carrier contributes significantly to milling accuracy and has a direct impact on the milling result.

A range of suitable workpiece carrier concepts is available, depending on the panel layout, the size of the individual PCBs, component geometries, and production volumes. Flexible workpiece carriers are the ideal solution when handling a wide variety of products—even in high volumes—that feature relatively simple layouts. When complex assemblies with demanding layouts require milling, a specialized workpiece carrier from our partner Schnaidt is used.

With the patented “MAGNOPLATE” magnetic workpiece carrier, custom-made workpiece carriers are no longer required for a large proportion of assemblies. The MAGNOPLATE enables enormous cost savings in scenarios involving high product variety.

The pins—which are magnetic at their lower end—can be picked up by the milling spindle and a special tool within the SCHUNK depaneling system, then placed onto the workpiece carrier base plate using dedicated software. The pin-placement program can be easily generated for any assembly using CAD/CAM software. Before a product changeover, the pins can be removed manually and repositioned for a new magnetic carrier configuration.

Custom workpiece carriers from Schnaidt

To rout printed circuit boards (PCBs) from a panel with high precision, the boards must be held securely in the correct position and must not shift after separation. The Schnaidt system ensures optimal holding and singulation of the PCBs. Removal plates allow for the rapid extraction of even large numbers of small, individual assemblies.

Do-it-yourself workpiece carrier

The do-it-yourself workpiece carrier allows for the independent fabrication of a product-specific workpiece carrier using the depaneling machine. Thanks to its high power output, the machine's spindle can also be used for drilling operations, such as creating holes in a plastic plate. Subsequently, the pins must be manually pressed into the drilled holes. These custom-made workpiece carriers are used for prototype production or for small to medium batch sizes.
